London calling

Posted in Films on the January 19, 2012

So, it’s 2012 at last and that means that us Londoners can now say that we’ll be hosting the Olympic Games this year. Makes it sound awfully close, doesn’t it? I do worry, though, by the time the actual event starts we’ll all be sick to the back teeth of those five rings and inspiring athletes. PVC banners promoting London 2012 seem to have flapping from lamp-posts all over the city since the day after the bid was won – and some of them are starting to look a bit tatty a few years on!

Looking good in London

Posted in Films on the November 24, 2011

We all love our city, but we also know that it’s a very expensive place to live! Once you’ve taken care of the rent, council tax and other bills, you’re left with enough for a month’s worth of value brand ready meals and one night out a week – if you’re lucky! Don’t even think for a second that on our paltry minimum wage salaries we can hope to score some designer threads to look good when we nurse our one drink a night in a West End club…

West End glamour

Posted in Films on the October 1, 2011

Not long now until the 55th London Film Festival and the chance to enjoy a bit of glitz and glamour as autumn fast approaches – not that anyone seems to have told the weather that summer is over! I love Film Festival week. I don’t usually get to see any of the actual movies, as most of the big screenings sell out weeks in advance and a lot of them are a little out of my price range, but there are lots of free or cheap events on the “fringe” of the main festival which are perfect for us non-celebrities to go out and enjoy.

There are two things I love to do when the Film Festival is in town; the first is just to go and hang out by the red carpet where the big premières are taking place in the hope of spotting a few genuine movie superstars. It seems London hosts a film première every week these days, but most of the “stars” that show up to these events would turn up at the opening of an envelope or a new diesel storage unit. I don’t consider a bunch of has-been reality TV stars worthy of my attention. The opening movie at the London Film Festival stars Rachel Weisz and Anthony Hopkins, both of whom have confirmed they’re going to attend. Oscar-winners! It doesn’t get much better than that…

My other favourite Film Festival pastime is going along to some of the retro screenings, or “Retrospectives” as they tend to be called in the programme! This year, I have my eye on ’Bye Bye Birdie'which features a first appearance by a young star called Ann-Margret as well as a satire by Rossellini about a photographer whose camera has the power to kill people. I like to consider myself a bit of an expert when it comes to Italian cinema, but even I haven’t heard of this little-screened fantasy. Who needs celebrities when the movies themselves are the big stars?

Get in shape for the summer

Get in shape for the summer

I can’t actually afford to go on holiday this year, which means I’m not as worried as usual about how podgy my belly is going to look in a bikini! However, these summer temperatures do mean an inevitable few days at the Serpentine Lido or a few nights out in skimpy outfits, so I’m have to o some emergency exercise work to get myself into shape…

I’ve never been a big fan of gyms; full of pumped up, muscle-bound patrons, Read the rest of this entry »

Live Music in London

Posted in Films on the June 6, 2011

The live music scene in London is one of the hottest in the world and has been since the rolling 60´s. The music industry is doing its best to destroy talented musicians in favour of the chord tricksters, but they will need the strength of laser hair removal treatment to remove London´s rebellious youngsters from the scene.

Most of the best live music venues are the smaller, more intimate venues. Otherwise you get mainstream trash and trash wanting to be Read the rest of this entry »

Fabric Nightclub Review

Posted in Films on the April 28, 2011

So I did a Microdermabrasion to help my skin look beautiful and decided to venture out later that night to one of London’s hot spots. Now London has evolved into a happening place for many clubbers over the past couple of years. As new clubs continue sprouting across London, one club called “Fabric Nightclub” has managed to stand out of the crowd.

Previously a Victorian meat market; the venue certainly gives the club a competitive advantage over the rest of Read the rest of this entry »
